Smart Assembly started in SMAC’s early machine assembly days. The first application was for a micro capacitor discharge assembly used for CRT TVs.
The individual parts had a large tolerance variation but the final assembly demanded accurate dimensions which presented a problem with tolerance stack-up.
The successful solution was to measure all critical dimensions and adjust the final part locations accordingly.
A variant of this was used in SMC pilot valve assembly machines, which presented the same problems with large tolerances, this time from moulded plastic parts used due to cost.
The final assembly was centred around 1/3 of allowable variation which guaranteed that the part was always in tolerance.
Modern applications of Smart Assembly are mobile phone lens assembly for Apple and Samsung and a syringe assembly OEM that won an award at the recent PACK assembly.
Any manufacturer of devices where the final tolerance of a complex assembly is critical and when 100% verification is required (e.g. medical devices) should consider Smart Assembly actuators from SMAC.
