Incremental Rotary Optical Encoders

EncodersOverviewIncremental rotary optical encoders are devices that measure angular position. Incremental encoders, which output a pulse train to allow the controlling device to count up or down from the current position, are the most common type but absolute models...

Absolute Optical Encoders

EncodersOverviewAbsolute optical encoders output a signal that directly relates to absolute position. For this reason, they do not require a homing or reference signals. ORLIN Technologies offers a range of stepper motors fitted with absolute encoders from the...

Incremental Linear Optical Encoders

EncodersOverviewWe supply incremental linear optical encoders, proven in SMAC’s own range of linear actuators with over 100,000 units in the field. These miniature devices are perfect for embedded and OEM applications. SLE, LL and LI model linear encoders 5, 1, 0.5,...

Custom Optical Encoders

Overview

Working directly with SMAC’s dedicated encoder division in the USA, ORLIN Technologies is now able to offer custom optical encoders to customers’ specification with impressive lead times and low costs.

The following examples should give an idea of our capabilities:

Custom rotary motor with encoder for pick and placeCustom rotary encoder for major pick and place OEM

To replace the previous end-of-life part from another manufacturer.

  • Theta motor optical encoder
  • High resolution 48,000 counts per revolution, 16mm diameter
  • Integrated onto motor

Custom rotary encoder next to coinCustom rotary encoder for major wafer handling OEM

In this example, the previous encoder supplier made this critical part obsolete at very short notice, which meant the customer needed a rapid solution.

  • Designed in two weeks
  • Prototype units delivered in six weeks
  • Delivered at a lower cost to customer than the encoder it replaced

Custom actuator to replace LVDT measurement device

Customer: Major automotive & aerospace die cast manufacturer
Solution: Based on SMAC’s LCA25-025 actuator model, but with bespoke encoder signal specifications to match the customer’s existing electrical interface.

CAD model of custom SMAC linear actuator

  • “MCA-Inside” technology allowed quick development of a drop-in replacement
  • Connector, cabling and encoder voltage matched to customer requirement
  • Significantly lower cost than competition (well-known sensor manufacturers)
  • Custom shaft tip
