Vibration Control In Manufacturing & Ultrasonic Assistance

Many tooling systems can be improved by controlling vibration to assist in the process, either by vibration assistance or by reducing unwanted vibrations. We can supply piezoelectric, magnetostrictive and magnetic actuators which can control and direct vibration to where it is best used. We can work with frequencies ranging from tens of Hertz up to ultrasonic, with strokes from tens of microns to millimeters.

VIBRATION ASSISTANCE

Vibration assisted machining: The application of forced vibrations in machining processes enables the tools to drill better quality holes, faster and with no lubricant. Several projects Vibration assisted toolingusing the technology are demonstrating noticable gains with vibration assistance when compared to conventional drilling. High-amplitude forced vibrations up to 1kHz have proven effective and are now industrially feasible.

Friction reduction: High frequency vibrations can act as a lubricant and reduce the friction in many material shaping processes where stability is required, such as deep-drawing, extrusion and moulding.
In processes using extrusion and micro parts injection moulding, our technology has been used to increase extrusion speed, reduce wear and save energy while showing an improvement in the quality of the manufactured products.

Ultrasonic assistance: Ultrasonic energy is beneficial for industrial processes including cleaning, outgassing, extracting, coating and many other sonochemical processing. Our solutions use innovative ultrasonic transducers, generating high-power acoustic fields that are specifically adapted to their applications. For example, the Modular UltraSonic Transducers (MUST) have been successfully used to apply anti-bacterial nano-particles to textiles. The same technology is being used in a new sonochemical processor for recycling used batteries.

VIBRATION CONTROL

In machining processes, unwanted vibrations can increase tool wear and impact upon surface quality and accuracy. Vibration damping, either by direct control or by using counter-mass architecture, will improve speed, quality and throughput.

Direct control: In direct control the actuator is placed between a stable mechanical reference and the controlled tool. We supply PPA and APA Piezo Actuators that are robust but with a high dynamic capability, which are incredibly efficient and compact.

Counter Mass: Instead of a fixed mechanical reference, it is also possible to control the motion of a free counter-mass (or proof mass), creating reaction forces to dampen unwanted vibration. The powerful and controllable MICA™ actuators have been specifically designed for these applications, and their compact size means easy integration into an existing production environment.
