Sliding shoe sorters are devices used on conveyors for gentle diversion and sorting of packages and bags. They can rapidly handle a wide variety of shapes, sizes and weights when configured correctly.
Shoe sorters consist of a slatted conveyor with a shoe that can slide across the width to push items off the belt without damaging impacts to the package. The shoes run in tracks under the belt which guide them. At exit points there are switches or “gates” similar to railway points that when activated divert the shoe onto an angled track which causes it to move across the conveyer, taking the package with it. Traditionally, these gates are operated by a pneumatic cylinder, but SMAC has been working with a major US manufacturer of conveyor sorters to upgrade their units to linear servo actuators.
SMAC actuators have the advantage of:
-
No compressed air required
-
Higher speed
-
Faster and more consistent response time
-
Much longer life
-
Quieter operation
-
Programmable speed, acceleration and force
-
Data feedback to assist with scheduled maintenance
